Anti-UAV Defence System (AUDS) Unveiled by Trio of British Technology Companies

  • Blighter Surveillance Systems (electronic-scanning radar target detection), Chess Dynamics (electro-optic tracking and classification) and Enterprise Control Systems (radio frequency disruption) join forces to combat growing threat of micro, mini and larger unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) or drones
  • Anti-UAV Defence System (AUDS) designed to detect, track, classify and disrupt UAVs at ranges of up to 8km; at recent international trials, AUDS successfully disrupted a variety of micro, compact and standard UAVs

London, UK, May 19, 2015 – A trio of British technology companies comprising Blighter Surveillance Systems, Chess Dynamics and Enterprise Control Systems – leaders in their respective fields – have combined forces to develop a powerful, highly effective and fully integrated Anti-UAV Defence System (AUDS) to combat the growing threat of malicious micro, mini and larger unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) or drones.

The Anti-UAV Defence System (AUDS) integrates the Blighter A400 Series Ku band electronic scanning air security radar, Chess Dynamics’ stabilised electro-optic director, infrared and daylight cameras and target tracking software, and a directional radio frequency (RF) inhibitor/jammer system from Enterprise Control Systems to detect, track, classify, disrupt and neutralise UAVs at ranges of up to 8 km. The AUDS system is even effective against so-called Group 1 micro UAVs at ranges of up to 2 km and Group 1 mini UAVs at ranges of several kms.

Mark Radford, CEO, Blighter Surveillance Systems, said: “We formed the all-British AUDS team in 2014 as we were each acutely aware of the urgent operational requirement from our customers for an effective and affordable anti-UAV system. Working in partnership, we have developed some clever technology (patents are pending) that integrates the different sensors, effector and electro-mechanical positioning systems to disrupt and bring down any malicious drone in a phased and controlled manner.”

According to the AUDS team, the technology has been extensively tested in South Korea along the 250km demilitarised zone (DMZ), where Blighter radars have been deployed for some years. In March 2015, the AUDS team took part in multi-supplier French Government trials in Captieux, France, where its counter UAV system proved highly successful in detecting and neutralising a variety of fixed and rotary wing micro, compact and standard UAVs. And last week, the system also performed well in UK Government sponsored counter UAV trials (known as Bristow 15) in West Freugh, Scotland.

The AUDS system is designed for counter UAV operations in remote border sites or urban areas. It can be operated from fixed locations and from mobile platforms. Key features and benefits include:

  • Fully electronic scanning radar technology with Doppler processing allowing all weather, 24-hour detection of both fast and slow moving micro and mini UAV targets with unsurpassed ground clutter suppression for near horizon operation;
  • Highly accurate stabilised pan and tilt director combined with the very latest electro-optic infrared day and night cameras and state-of-the-art digital video tracking technology to automatically track the UAV and classify the target;
  • Smart radio frequency inhibitor to selectively disrupt various command and control communication links employed by the UAV. Disruptive effect can be carried out in an intelligent, proportional and non-kinetic manner to mitigate collateral impact, and the inhibitor/jammer system is software controlled giving the capacity to counter new and emerging threats;

Colin Bullock, CEO, Enterprise Control Systems, said: “We believe that with the combination of our three systems – best-in-class expertise in radar detection, camera & video tracking and RF jamming & data communications – we have a world-beating product that competes even with systems based around expensive military 3-D air security radars. And, AUDS is available at commercial (COTS) prices right now.”

With incidents of UAV and drone related security breaches occurring on an almost daily basis, the AUDS system is able to address the heightened concern about UAVs within military, government, critical infrastructure and commercial security organisations. While UAVs have many positive applications, it’s expected that they’ll be used increasingly for malicious purposes – they can carry cameras, weapons, toxic chemicals and explosives – and be used increasingly for terrorism, espionage and smuggling purposes.

Graham Beall, managing director, Chess Dynamics, said: “This is truly an exciting collaboration – three British high-tech companies with different technologies and expertise working together to address the global problem of UAV detection. Our new invention is a complete smart sensor and effector package that can automatically detect, track, classify and when required neutralise the potential impact of malicious UAVs with a measured response. These three fully integrated technologies give AUDS a truly optimised Sensor Effector Mix.”

The Anti-UAV Defence System (AUDS) has been designed, developed and manufactured in the UK using British technology and is available to order now with shipments beginning in August 2015. For more information about AUDS, please contact any of the partner companies below:

Blighter E-scan Radars Selected by Unlimited Technology to Secure Perimeter of Middle Eastern Air Base

  • Blighter’s B400 Series PESA e-scan Doppler radars to be integrated with a long range illuminated camera system for day and night operation
  • Blighter to demonstrate Blighter Guardian at IDEX 2015 (Stand 05-C16), 22 to 26 February 2015, Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre, UAE

Cambridge, UK, February 20, 2015 – Blighter Surveillance Systems (www.blighter.com), a British electronic-scanning radar and sensor solution provider, has been selected to supply its Blighter B400 Series e-scan radars to secure the perimeter of a strategic air base in the Middle East. The contract was awarded to Blighter by Unlimited Technology, Inc., a security market systems integrator based in Chester Springs, Pennsylvania. The contract value was not disclosed.

The Blighter passive electronically scanned array (PESA) radars will form part of an integrated perimeter security system at the Middle Eastern air base and this will include a long range illuminated camera system for day and night operation. Blighter will also supply its BlighterTrack multi hypothesis software-based radar target tracker and its BlighterView HMI 2 control system to display the radars and to cue the camera systems. This configuration is known as Blighter Guardian. A ‘Sensor Node’ from Unlimited Technology will integrate the complete sensor suite and control electronics into a comprehensive ‘plug and play’ package for ease of installation by the local integrator.

Brent Franklin, president, Unlimited Technology, Inc., said: “We needed a field-proven robust and reliable e-scan radar system for a strategic airbase security solution in the Middle East. It was vital that the solution was maintenance free and offered 24-hour all-weather capability, low false alarm rates and had the range to look beyond the perimeter to provide the early target detection that our customer required. Blighter was able to meet our needs in full and demonstrate similar successful deployments – for example, by the British Army for forward operating base security and by the Koreans along the demilitarised zone (DMZ).”

Mark Radford, CEO, Blighter Surveillance Systems, said: “We are delighted to see yet another military air base adopt our Blighter surveillance solution. Our solid state PESA electronic scanning radar technology has no mechanical moving parts to wear out or to get contaminated by sand or dust and therefore it’s ideal for the dusty and arid conditions found in the Middle East. Importantly, our radar is also visually covert and virtually maintenance free.”

Blighter Guardian is designed for securing airbase perimeters and forward operation bases (FOBs) and provides a 24/7 all-weather persistent surveillance capability in the toughest of conditions. Blighter Guardian detects small and slow moving targets – even in cluttered environments – due to the radar’s coactive frequency modulated continuous wave (FMCW) Doppler fast-scan processing. The radar can detect a walking person at 11km (6.8 miles) or a large moving vehicle at 25km (15.5 miles) and then cue the camera system to follow and identify targets.

A typical Blighter airbase or FOB configuration consists of the Blighter B400 Series PESA radar, BlighterTrack software, and slew-to-cue PTZ (pan, tilt, zoom) thermal imaging surveillance system. The BlighterView HMI 2 control software displays and records all the elements including additional sensors such as a perimeter intruder detection system (PIDS).

Blighter’s ITAR-free systems are used worldwide in commercial, government and defence markets in area and asset protection for national border security, homeland security, critical infrastructure protection such as airports, coastal surveillance, and in military applications.

For more information about the integrated Blighter perimeter security radar and camera solution or other products from Blighter Surveillance Systems, please visit www.blighter.com, telephone +44 1223 491122 or email [email protected].

Blighter Sea Clutter Filter Enhances Radar Effectiveness

  • Blighter’s low power, solid state, zero maintenance PESA radar with Doppler signal processing filters out sea wave clutter returns in both velocity and amplitude; detects very small and slow moving targets (smugglers and pirates in kayaks, RIBS etc.) in rough seas, heavy rain and fog out to 10 km

Blighter has enhanced its Blighter e-scan radar’s effectiveness for coastal and harbour security with a raft of new features including a sea wave clutter filter.

The new features will enable its radar to protect complex coastlines from intruders such as smugglers, pirates, illegals and terrorists using jet skis, kayaks and rigid inflatable boats (RIBs) at ranges of up to 10km away. The Blighter radar is now able to detect and locate these small and slow moving targets day and night and in almost all weather conditions, in rough seas, heavy rain or dense fog.

Mark Radford, CEO of Blighter Surveillance Systems, said: “Protecting coastlines from illegal intruders is a growing concern for countries the world over. Our Blighter coastal security radar’s unique algorithms and Doppler signal processing enables it to detect the small and uncooperative targets that traditional coastal surveillance radars such as vessel traffic systems and maritime radars are simply not designed for.”

The Blighter low power solid state passive electronic scanning array radar features frequency modulated continuous wave (FMCW) transmission technology combined with sensitive Doppler target detection. The sea clutter filter enables the Doppler signal processing unit to filter out sea wave clutter returns in both velocity and amplitude.

“As colour is to CCTV images, Doppler is to radar detection. It adds a third dimension to target detection so that not only are targets identified in azimuth (compass bearing) and range but they are also discriminated by Doppler velocity, the relative speed of each target,” added Mark Radford. “The sea clutter filter automatically classifies the sea clutter and removes it and uses a non-moving target detection filter to extract static targets from the Doppler filter enabling it to detect static boats, buoys and other features in a coastal or port environment.”

The Blighter radar is about the size of a large brief case and uses a fraction of the power of other radars – it transmits only 4 Watts of power and consumes just 100 Watts allowing operation via solar panels and easy installation in difficult areas to reach such as rocky or inaccessible coastal regions. The radar’s low data bandwidth requirement also allows remote operation over narrowband wireless links or satellite communication systems.

Like most radars, Blighter integrates with a range of electro-optic camera systems – and other situation awareness sensors – and these elements are controlled through the BlighterView HMI command and control (C2) software platform. BlighterView can also integrate with AIS transponders, PIDS systems, fusion and target/video tracking elements.

Blighter Surveillance Systems delivers an integrated multi-sensor package to systems integrators comprising the Blighter radars plus cameras, thermal imagers, trackers and software solutions. Its ITAR-free systems are used worldwide in commercial, government and defence markets in area and asset protection for national border security, homeland security, critical infrastructure protection such as airports, coastal surveillance, and in military applications.

Blighter radar solutions are used at Heathrow and other international airports, by the British Army for force protection, and in numerous asset protection and border security applications, including monitoring the Korean Demilitarised Zone (DMZ), a buffer zone which runs 250 km across the Korean peninsula and separates North and South Korea.

Blighter Unveils Rapid Deployment Radar/Camera System for Border Security Hot Spots

  • Blighter Scout features 360-degree e-scan radar and low light camera and thermal imaging system, and integrated radar tracker and is designed for vehicle or trailer mast deployment
  • Blighter Scout enables detection and tracking of targets – humans at 7.4 km, vehicles at 22 km – in hilly and mountainous areas due to radar’s unique PESA technology and its 20 to 40-degree elevation beam coverage
  • Blighter Surveillance Systems to launch Blighter Scout at Eurosatory in Paris, France (16-20 June) and at DVD in Millbrook, UK (25-26 June)

Cambridge, UK, June 6, 2014 – Blighter Surveillance Systems (www.blighter.com), a British electronic-scanning radar and sensor solution provider, has unveiled Blighter Scout, a lightweight e-scan radar and camera surveillance system designed for rapid deployment in border security hot spots and other similar security applications.

Featuring the Blighter Revolution 360 Passive Electronic Scanning Array (PESA) radar, low light camera, thermal imaging system and an integrated radar tracker, Blighter Scout is designed for mounting on vehicle and trailer masts for field deployment in just minutes.

Blighter Scout provides a low cost and lightweight mobile surveillance capability for situations where fixed towers are prohibitively expensive, impractical to build or simply ineffective due to the terrain or environment.

Mark Radford, CEO of Blighter Surveillance Systems, said: “Blighter Scout enables security forces to deploy our surveillance platform to exactly where it’s needed. For example, to monitor a hot spot on an extensive border or to follow intruder routes as they adapt to the seasons or in reaction to ground interdiction.”

Blighter Scout detects small and slow moving targets – even in cluttered environments – due to the radar’s coactive Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave (FMCW) Doppler fast-scan processing. The radar can detect a walking person at 7.4 km (4.6 miles) or a large moving vehicle at 22 km (13.7 miles) and then cue the camera system to follow and identify targets.

With its wide 20-degree continuous elevation beam coverage – which can be increased to 40-degrees via a simple built-in manual tilt control – Blighter Scout can operate in hilly or mountainous areas scanning hill tops and valleys in a single sweep.

Blighter Scout integrates with a range of electro-optic camera systems. The standard complementary system for Blighter Scout is Chess Dynamics’ Hawkeye electro-optic platform featuring the Piranha MRTV or LRTV high sensitivity colour daylight TV cameras and a Piranha TV wide field of view context camera – with an option for cooled or uncooled thermal imagers.

The Blighter Scout radar and camera surveillance system are integrated and controlled through the BlighterView HMI 2 command and control (C2) software platform enabling auto-cueing with manual override. An optional video tracking application also allows the camera system to automatically follow an intruder once the radar has cued it to the target location.

“Blighter Scout can be supplied in a palletised form complete with a standard telescopic mast ready to slide onto the back of a standard 4×4 pickup truck or other surveillance vehicles/trailers,” added Mark Radford. “The complete system requires only a single mast as the electro-optic platform is mounted on top with the radar rotating around the mast section directly below it.”

Blighter Announces Low-cost Mast-mounted Mobile E-scan Radar

  • Blighter Revolution 360 addresses growing requirement for low-cost and lightweight vehicle-mobile radar surveillance for defence and security applications
  • Long-life maintenance free cable-drive azimuth positioner allows full 360-degree scan & pan surveillance in just 12.5 seconds
  • Blighter Surveillance Systems to exhibit Blighter radars at Milipol Paris, Paris Nord Villepinte, 19-22 November (Stand 5T-061)

Cambridge, UK, November 14, 2013 – Blighter Surveillance Systems (www.blighter.com), a British electronic-scanning radar and sensor solution provider, today announced Blighter® Revolution 360, a mobile e-scan radar designed to address the growing need for low-cost and lightweight vehicle-mobile radar surveillance systems within the military market and in commercial and state security applications.

Consuming less than 100 Watts of power and with a 38 kg mast payload, the novel system detects small and slow moving targets – even in cluttered environments – due to the radar’s coactive Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave (FMCW) Doppler fast-scan processing. The radar can detect a walking person at 7.4 km (4.6 miles) or a large moving vehicle at 22 km (13.7 miles).

Blighter Revolution 360 system is deployable on vehicle or trailer masts and uses a specially-designed maintenance-free cable drive azimuth positioner to provide 360-degree surveillance capability with a single Blighter B402 radar unit. Operating in Vortex fast-scan mode, Blighter Revolution 360 can achieve full 360-degree ‘scan & pan’ surveillance in just 20 seconds.

With its wide 20-degree continuous elevation beam coverage – which can be increased to 40-degrees via an optional motorised tilt option – Blighter Revolution 360 is particularly well suited for mobile deployment in hilly or mountainous areas, such as where a surveillance vehicle is high on a mountain top or deep in a valley.

Mark Radford, CEO of Blighter Surveillance Systems, said: “With Blighter Revolution 360 we are now able to offer all the benefits of our best value long-range B400 series radar in a format that is attractive to the price and weight conscious mobile surveillance market.”

Blighter Revolution 360 uniquely revolves around its mast – hence the name – and this allows it to sit beneath an integrated electro-optic camera system.

“This is a big advantage in this market as many customers will want to slew a thermal camera system to track intrusions and allow fast identification of any possible threat,” added Mark Radford. “Our system features a non-rotational central post for mast-top camera mounting and our BlighterView HMI 2 software platform is designed to integrate with a wide range of third party camera systems to make this a straightforward process.”

Blighter Surveillance Systems delivers an integrated multi-sensor package to systems integrators comprising the Blighter radars plus cameras, thermal imagers, trackers and software solutions. Its systems are used worldwide in commercial, government and defence markets in area and asset protection for national border security, homeland security, critical infrastructure protection such as airports, coastal surveillance, and in military applications.

Blighter Radars Deployed to Korean DMZ

  • B400 series electronic-scanning radars proven effective in extreme weather conditions and mountainous terrains

Cambridge, UK, October 9, 2013 – Blighter Surveillance Systems (www.blighter.com), a British electronic-scanning radar and sensor solution provider, has won a contract to supply the South Korean Armed Forces with its Blighter B400 series electronic-scanning radars. The value of the contract has not been disclosed.

The Blighter long-range ground surveillance radars will be deployed to monitor the Korean Demilitarised Zone (DMZ), a buffer zone which runs 250 km across the Korean peninsula and separates North and South Korea.

Blighter radars have been operational in South Korea for some years providing a persistent surveillance capability along the DMZ in what is considered one of the world’s most mountainous countries with environmental extremes of -30 ºC in winter and a humid +40 ºC in summer. The Blighter radars work 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, monitoring the 4 km-wide DMZ for any human, vehicle or low-flying aircraft incursions.

Mark Radford, CEO of Blighter Surveillance Systems, said: “We are delighted to have secured further business for this strategic border surveillance project. Our long-term relationship with the Koreans goes back some 8 years to when we first demonstrated our radar in the country.

“This contract for additional B400 radars clearly shows that our technology is effective in extreme weather conditions and in rocky terrain. The customer has also seen that the radars really do remain operational without any routine maintenance.”

Blighter radars are particularly well suited to border security applications due to their long-range detection capability (10 m to 2 km in steps up to 32 km), 20º wide elevation beam and their ability to detect very small and slow targets even in cluttered environments.

Blighter radars combine patented solid-state Passive Electronic Scanning Array (PESA) technology with advanced Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave (FMCW) and Doppler processing to provide a robust and persistent surveillance capability.

“Our radars are now deployed in more than 15 countries worldwide in commercial, government and defence markets,” added Mark Radford. “The radars are used at Heathrow and other international airports, by the British Army for force protection, and in numerous border security and asset protection applications.”

Blighter Celebrates 10th Anniversary of its Pioneering E-scan Ground Surveillance Radar at DSEI

  • Blighter radars are now deployed in more than 15 countries worldwide and it’s the only e-scan radar to offer coactive FMCW Doppler fast-scan capability, a major advantage for heavily cluttered environments
  • Blighter Surveillance Systems will be demonstrating its electronic-scanning radar and sensor solutions on stand S4-144 in the UK Pavilion at DSEI, the world’s largest defence and security exhibition, 10-13 September 2013 at ExCeL, London

Cambridge, UK, September 10, 2013 – Blighter Surveillance Systems (www.blighter.com), an electronic-scanning radar and sensor solution provider, is celebrating the 10th anniversary of the launch of its pioneering Blighter® ground surveillance radar (GSR) at DSEI, the world’s largest defence and security exhibition. The Blighter radar was first demonstrated at the DSEI event in 2003 and it is still going strong today.

The Blighter radar was the first commercial electronic-scanning GSR on the market and its modular solid state design – uniquely low power due to the patented passive electronic scanning array (PESA) technology – continues to give Blighter the edge over other e-scan radars.

Mark Radford, CEO of Blighter Surveillance Systems, said: “We were aware back in 2003 of traditional military ground surveillance radars and thought we could produce something smaller, cheaper and with better performance to penetrate commercial markets that simply could not afford traditional radars.

“Ten years at the frontier of security and our Blighter radars are now deployed in more than 15 countries worldwide in commercial, government and defence markets. Our radars are used at Heathrow and other international airports, by the British Army for force protection, and in numerous area and asset protection applications. The technology choices we made back then about e-scan and Doppler were right and the radar’s modular architecture and its scalability and extensibility has proved to be a great success.”

Blighter PESA radars are all-in-one integrated units comprising antennas, signal processing, plot extractor, GPS and compass. The radar units contain no moving parts and therefore offer dramatic improvements in reliability compared with mechanically-scanned radars. Blighter radars provide modular scanning from 90º to a full 360º configuration in a single radar.

“We believe we have the best value e-scanning solution on the market and our experienced design team continue to improve Blighter with new innovations,” added Mark Radford. “For example, Blighter’s the only e-scan radar to offer coactive FMCW Doppler fast-scan capability, a major advantage for heavily cluttered environments.”

Looking forward to the next decade, Blighter says it is focusing its design efforts to address mobile radar applications such as VIP protection and will be looking to reduce the price and weight of systems to address this sector. Furthermore, the company will continue to develop its integrated multi-sensor toolkit for systems integrators and has plans to enhance its B400 radar with static target detection to improve its littoral surveillance capability.

“We will be showcasing at DSEI our Blighter Revolution 360 product, developed in conjunction with Chess Dynamics,” added Mark Radford. “We will also be demonstrating our VIP protection system at the show. This consists of an integrated Blighter B202 Mk 2 portable radar working with Liteye System’s Aquila PTZ (pan, tilt, zoom) thermal imaging surveillance system.”

Siemens Selects Blighter B400 Radars for Perimeter Security at European Infrastructure Site

Cambridge, UK, June 12, 2013 – Blighter Surveillance Systems (www.blighter.com), an electronic-scanning radar and sensor solution provider, has supplied a number of its Blighter B400 long-range ground surveillance radars to Siemens (www.siemens.com) for installation at a national infrastructure site in Europe.

Siemens needed a field-proven electronic-scanning radar to monitor the perimeter of a strategic infrastructure site. It was important that the solution selected was maintenance free and offered 24-hour all-weather capability, very low false-alarm rates, the ability to detect vehicles and people including crawlers out to 7km, and cause minimal disruption to the site during installation.

Siemens selected the Blighter B400 series radars, which combine patented solid-state Passive Electronic Scanning Array (PESA) technology with advanced Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave (FMCW) and Doppler processing, to deliver a robust persistent-surveillance capability.

Milan Ceeh, head of Siemens’ Fire Safety and Security business unit in the Czech Republic, said: “We opted for the technically superior Blighter radars after careful consideration, analysis and field trials. The Blighter radars met all our requirements. The long-range detection capability and wide elevation beam enabled the radars to be remotely mounted on existing infrastructure at the site thus avoiding the cost and disruption of digging up surfaces to lay cables.”

The Blighter radars have now been installed at the location transmitting information (target latitude/longitude co-ordinates, range and bearing) over a TCP/IP network to a control room where they provide security staff with a map-based display of activity within the perimeter of the site. “Already the radars are proving successful,” added Milan Ceeh. “Within weeks of installation an intruder was detected by the radars, identified using the existing PTZ (pan, tilt, zoom) security cameras and apprehended by security staff after illegally crossing the perimeter.”

Mark Radford, CEO of Blighter Surveillance Systems, said: “We are delighted to be supplying our radars to Siemens for this strategic infrastructure site. Our solid state low power PESA radars – already in use in over 12 countries – are able to detect very small and slow moving targets in extremely cluttered environments which results in improved detection capabilities and reduced false alarm rates.”

Blighter PESA radars are all-in-one integrated units comprising antennas, signal processing, plot extractor, GPS and compass. The radars contain no moving parts and therefore offer dramatic improvements in reliability compared with mechanically-scanned radars. Blighter radars provide modular scanning from 90º to a full 360º configuration in a single radar.
