Cambridge, UK, July 23, 2019 – Blighter Surveillance Systems Ltd (www.blighter.com), a British designer and manufacturer of electronic-scanning (e-scan) radars and counter-drone solutions, has appointed Keith Todd CBE as non-executive chairman, Angus Hone as CEO, Tracy Sambrook as chief financial officer (CFO), and Carl P. Bannar as a non-executive director.

The changes at the Great Chesterford radar firm, spun out from the Plextek Group in 2016, are designed to strengthen the company ahead of the next stage of expansion. Blighter has enjoyed strong and sustained growth in recent years and achieved record revenue in the last 12 months driven by sales of its counter-drone technology and ground surveillance radars.
Blighter e-scan micro-Doppler radars are used in 35 countries, including, for example, by the UK MOD in Afghanistan, in South Korea monitoring the demilitarised zone (DMZ), by the United States Department of Defense in Iraq, and at London Gatwick airport detecting drone activity.
Angus Hone, the new CEO of Blighter Surveillance Systems, said: “We are now entering an exciting new chapter in our development as we seek to build on record growth and consolidate our success in defence and homeland security, protecting critical national infrastructure like airports, and guarding coastlines and national borders.”
Dr Colin Smithers, co-founder and Plextek chairman said “We have grown Blighter from conception to its present strength and it is now time to stand back from the day to day running. We are delighted to welcome Keith, Angus, Carl and Tracy onto its board as between them they have more than seven decades of experience guiding and growing technology companies. This experience will be vital as we seek to build partnerships across our key markets and exploit our leadership in developing counter drone solutions and ground detection radars.”
Keith Todd CBE joins the Blighter board as non-executive chairman. Keith has decades of senior management experience in the electronics markets. He was CEO at ICL plc for 13 years and prior to that was CFO at GEC Marconi.
Angus Hone joined Blighter earlier this year as CEO having worked for 20 years as CFO within several fast growth technology and biotech companies.
Carl P. Bannar joins the Blighter board as a non-executive director. Carl has 35 years of experience in the aerospace industry and until 2017 he was vice president and general manager at Lockheed Martin Rotary & Mission Systems with responsibility for the $2.7bn weapon, radar and electronic warfare systems business.

Cambridge, UK, March 26, 2019 – Blighter Surveillance Systems Ltd (www.blighter.com), a British designer and manufacturer of electronic-scanning (e-scan) radars and surveillance solutions, has partnered with Genetec™ (www.genetec.com) a leading technology provider of unified security, public safety, operations and business intelligence, to integrate its range of Blighter ground surveillance radars with Genetec™ Security Center, the company’s flagship unified IP security platform.

This integration enables airports to ‘fold-in’ the wide area surveillance capability provided by Blighter’s range of radars, super-charging situational awareness in their existing command and control (C2) systems to deliver round the clock surveillance in all weather and light conditions. The collaboration will also enable the Blighter radar and target tracking data to be shared across Genetec’s other decision management and support systems as well as with its collaborative digital management solution, Genetec Clearance™.
David Lenot, Director Transportation – EMEA, Genetec, said: “We are seeing a growing number of airports that want to add primary radar capability to their existing security and CCTV systems, so we are pleased to be partnering with Blighter Surveillance Systems to integrate their radars and tracker within Security Center. This integration will make it easier for our customers to introduce Blighter’s maintenance free solid-state micro Doppler radars and tracker into airports providing improved situational awareness but without adding to the complexity of installed systems.”
Another benefit of the Blighter/Security Center integration is the ability to create Dynamic Virtual (non-physical) Perimeters across an airport site. This is helpful for providing CZ/RZ (controlled zone/restricted zone) separation monitoring but it is particularly useful for the many airports undergoing expansion or enhancement projects. The ability to build Dynamic Virtual Perimeters around work areas is hugely attractive both as a cost saving measure and as a means of reducing disruption inside an operating area that is already very crowded and busy.
Geoff Moore, business development manager, Blighter Surveillance Systems, said: “The ability to create Dynamic Virtual Perimeters as opposed to putting up fences or turnstiles is extremely attractive for airports. It has the potential to save considerable time, money and minimise disruption during construction projects. Working with our radars, the sophisticated Security Center platform can quickly and easily set up zones on a map that trigger different types of action depending on complex configurable rule sets.”
Genetec Security Center is a unified security platform that blends IP security systems within a single intuitive interface to simplify operations. From access control, video surveillance, and automatic license plate recognition to communications, intrusion detection, and analytics, Security Center provides enhanced situational awareness, unified command and control, and connectivity to the Cloud.
“We are delighted to be integrating our radars and tracker with Genetec Security Center,” said Geoff Moore, business development manager, Blighter Surveillance Systems, “Genetec offers a wide-ranging global experience in the aviation sector – and a large installed base of airports – which has resulted in an extensive set of airport specific functionality being implemented inside the platform.”
Blighter’s passive electronically scanned array (PESA) radars, featuring Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave (FMCW) micro Doppler fast scan capability, perform well in cluttered airport environments, detecting small and slow-moving targets with minimal false alarms. The radars deliver a 24x7x365 all-weather persistent surveillance capability.
The Blighter B400 series radar – the most popular for airports – can detect and track a walking person at 11 km (6.8 miles), a crawler at 4.6 km (2.9 miles) or a large moving vehicle at 25 km (15.5 miles) and then cue a camera system to follow and identify targets. The Blighter radar can be mounted high up on existing airport infrastructure thereby minimising installation costs and maximising surveillance as the radar can see over obstacles including aircraft and vehicles.
Blighter Surveillance Systems and Genetec will showcase their products and solutions for airports on stand 4120 at the Passenger Terminal Expo, ExCeL Centre, London, 26-28 March 2019.

Cambridge, UK, February 14, 2019 – Blighter Surveillance Systems Ltd (www.blighter.com), a British designer and manufacturer of electronic-scanning (E-scan) radars and surveillance solutions, is supplying its Blighter B400 series E-scan micro Doppler ground surveillance radar to Dat-Con Defence for deployment along the Indian border.
The Blighter radar was supplied to and deployed by Dat-Con Defence during 2018 as part of the Indian Government’s Comprehensive Integrated Border Management System (CIBMS). CIBMS is designed to establish a multi-tier security ring – ground surveillance radar, thermal cameras, unattended ground sensors, seismic vibration systems, fences and fence protection systems – to protect the country’s long international borders.
Dat-Con has integrated the Blighter radar, cameras and other sensors into its own command and control (C2) system. Sensor information from its C2 system is integrated with the CIBMS system to alert quick response teams (QRTs) of the Indian Border Security Force for action. Dat-Con has partnered with in-country Pune-based Ador Powertron for this pilot project.
Stane Plaskan, CEO of Dat-Con Defence, said: “The Blighter B400 micro Doppler radar is best-in-class as was demonstrated when it outperformed all the other radars in an Indian Government-sponsored trial. Also, we know that this radar is highly effective in difficult terrains – such as mountains, plains and coastal areas, as it has been deployed for many years now along the 250 km Korean DMZ, in what is considered one of the world’s most mountainous countries with environmental extremes of -30ºC in winter and a humid +40ºC in summer.”
The Blighter radar’s wide elevation beam was a key feature for the Indian CIBMS project as it ensures that the radar can operate effectively in all terrains allowing the hills, mountains, plains, riverine territories and marshes to be scanned simultaneously, without the need to tilt the radar. The wide beam also provides detection of low flying manned and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and drones.
The solid-state passive electronically scanned array (PESA) radar detects small and slow-moving targets, even in cluttered environments, due to the radar’s coactive frequency modulated continuous wave (FMCW) micro Doppler fast-scan processing. The radar delivers a 24x7x365 all-weather persistent surveillance capability. It can detect and track a walking person at 11 km (6.8 miles), a crawler at 4.6 km (2.9 miles) or a large moving vehicle at 25 km (15.5 miles) and then cue a camera system to follow and identify targets.
Mark Radford, CEO, Blighter Surveillance Systems, said: “This is our second contract win for pilot projects linked to the Indian border security CIBMS initiative – further proof of the quality of our ultra-reliable, zero-maintenance Blighter B400 series radar.”
Blighter Surveillance Systems has now sold hundreds of its E-scan ground surveillance radars across 35 different countries. It has systems deployed along the Korean demilitarised zone (DMZ), on the US Southern border, in several Middle Eastern countries, and now in India too. Blighter Surveillance Systems delivers an integrated multi-sensor package to system integrators comprising the Blighter radars plus cameras, thermal imagers, trackers and software solutions. Its ITAR-free systems are used worldwide in commercial, government and defence markets in area and asset protection for national border security, homeland security, critical infrastructure protection such as oil and gas facilities, coastal surveillance, and in military applications.
Dat-Con Defence will be showcasing the Blighter B400 series radar at The International Defence Exhibition and Conference (IDEX 2019), at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre (ADNEC), Abu Dhabi, UAE, (Stand 10-B15: Slovenia Pavilion), from 17 to 21 February 2019.
