World Defense Show to Feature Blighter’s Multi-Mode Radar

Cambridge, UK, February 16, 2022 – Blighter Surveillance Systems (‘Blighter’, www.blighter.com), the British designer and manufacturer of electronic-scanning radars and surveillance solutions is set to exhibit at upcoming international defence exhibitions to showcase the recently launched A800 Multi-Mode Drone Detection Radar, as well as other cutting-edge radar platforms. Following the first appearance of the A800 3D radar at DSEI 2021, as part of the ADS Group UK Pavilion, Blighter’s first round of exhibition visits for 2022 will include the World Defense Show in Saudi Arabia, Security and Policing in the UK, and the Border Security Expo in San Antonio, Texas.

Blighter’s A800 radar (www.blighter.com/a800) offers an innovative ground-based solution to threat detection, utilising multi-mode surveillance capability usually reserved only for large-scale radar systems and packaging it into a smaller, more flexible radar with a maximum range of 20km. The A800 3D multi-mode radar is ideally suited to border and perimeter surveillance, capable of being mounted to fixed towers and masts, as well as to land vehicles and mobile surveillance trailers.

World Defense Show, Security and Policing & Border Security Expo Tour

The World Defense Show will take place from 6-9 March 2022. The event focuses on interoperability across air, land, sea, security innovative defence technologies and satellite defence systems and will be held in Saudi Arabia’s capital, Riyadh. Located at Stand G15.4, Blighter’s showcase will highlight the B400’s applications for border security as a vehicle-mobile or fixed-tower solution capable of high performance in extreme heat conditions.

Security & Policing, the official Government global security event, returns as a live event for its 40th anniversary between 15‐17 March 2022 at the Farnborough International Exhibition and Conference Centre in the UK. Visitors will find Blighter’s stand at A54.

The Border Security Expo is an annual international trade fair with accompanying conference on border security, taking place from 29-30 March in San Antonio, Texas. Blighter will be exhibiting on Stand no. 733. Alongside the A800, visitors will also find a trailer-mast mounted A400 series radar.

Last year the Cambridgeshire-based manufacturer was selected to provide advanced integrated B400 series target acquisition radars for a fleet of Armoured Fighting Vehicles, demonstrating the company’s agility in providing the versatile systems required for such a demanding and mobile role. In July 2021, Blighter’s US partner JGW Group also delivered demonstrations of the highly mobile A400 series radars’ ability to detect and track sUAS targets. Most recently, Blighter won a contract to provide surveillance for offshore and onshore oil facilities in West Africa.

Angus Hone, CEO of Blighter Surveillance Systems said:

“This is an exciting time for our industry as key calendar events for national security, such as Security & Policing and Border Security Expo, are set reconnect our community. We also could not miss the inaugural World Defense Show which will be an excellent opportunity for us to showcase our cutting-edge radar technology to a wider audience. We look forward to joining our partners and customers at these shows and exhibiting Blighter’s game-changing detection capabilities.”

Blighter Radars at DSEI 2021

It has now been confirmed that DSEI 2021 will proceed as a live event in September this year, with a new digital offering running alongside the live exhibition. DSEI will take place as originally scheduled from 14-17 September at ExCeL London, a decision which follows close consultation and discussion with the UK Government and key industry stakeholders. Blighter Surveillance Systems (BSS) is pleased to be exhibiting its Blighter radars at DSEI 2021 this year, and we look forward to engaging with the industry after a long period of being unable to do so in person.

The lengthy global shutdown of the live exhibition sector during the pandemic has meant that the defence and security industry has shown a strong appetite for DSEI, an event which will provide a critical and unmissable forum for many thousands of companies to convene in person.

This year there will be a range of online opportunities which will complement the in-person event, a new digital offering which will be known as ‘DSEI Connect’.  DSEI Connect is a platform which will bring participants from across the globe together with those attending the event in London to create a flexible and accessible hybrid format. DSEI Connect will offer registered participants a regulated platform for relationship building, knowledge sharing and business development using DSEI’s connection portal, ‘MeetMe’. MeetMe will enable users to view recommended contacts through its supply chain listings, identify networking opportunities and arrange secure online or in-person meetings at the event.  Thus, visitors will be able to see Blighter radars at DSEI 2021 both online and in-person.

Counter-UAS Radar Capability Demonstration to Students

Blighter Surveillance Systems participated as one of the industry contributors in the Defence Academy’s AeroSystems Master of Science (MSc) programme, giving a presentation to students on the application and development of radars for security and surveillance purposes, and the roles of SMEs in the defence supply chain, including a demonstration of counter-UAS radar capability. The group of students were from the Royal Navy, Royal Air Force and Royal Australian Navy and were accompanied by Flt Lt Nick Dehnel, AeroSystems Directing Staff, from the Defence Academy’s Technology and Business faculty.

The course is run by the Defence Academy in partnership with Cranfield University and is aimed at preparing future leaders from across the Services for roles in test and evaluation, requirements management, and in support of 5th generation air platform mission systems.

Blighter hosted the visit at a facility in Duxford, Cambridgeshire. Among those attending were Mark Radford, Co-founder and Chief Technology Officer, and James Long, Chief Operating Officer.

The demonstration showed how the Blighter A402 e-scanning radar looks for air and land targets and identifies them using Doppler signature detection capability, and emits an audio signal according to target type.

“Blighter is at the forefront of technology development for e-scanning radar and counter-UAS solutions and we are very pleased to have been able to support the Defence Academy in this important multi-domain education programme for the next generation of military leaders”, said Mark Radford. “The students will go on to have a great deal of interaction with industry in their future roles as requirement managers and technical advisors particularly, in the ISTAR and UAS domains; we hope that our participation in the MSc programme will have broadened the students’ understanding of radar technology and the capabilities they bring to addressing the threats posed by the malign operation of UAS.”

Counter-UAS Radar Capability

The A400 series air security radars are optimised for the detection of small drones carrying video cameras, wireless communication systems, narcotics, explosives and other malicious payloads. A400 series radars use D3 (Digital Drone Detection) technology that enables them to extract the tiny radar reflections from modern plastic bodied UAVs even when flying close to the ground or near buildings where clutter reflections are relatively large. Blighter’s Ku-band operating frequency is ideally suited to detecting the small structures used to construct compact UAVs such as the control wires, battery pack, motor and wireless communications system.

A400 series radars are capable of detecting small drones at ranges from 10 m to more than 3 km, and larger drones and aircraft at ranges up to 20 km. Drone speeds ranging from hover-drift to more than 400 km/h are all detected. Target tracking software and extensive zone filtering facilities allow drones to be detected while reducing false alarms from birds
