Spanish Defence Ministry Selects AUDS System to Detect and Neutralise UAVs/Drones

  • AUDS detect-track-identify-defeat counter-drone system is the only mission-deployed fully integrated, military grade counter-UAS system on the market

Cambridge, UK, June 21, 2017 – The Spanish Defence Ministry (Ministerio de Defensa) has selected the AUDS counter-UAV system to protect critical assets and personnel from the growing threat posed by malicious unmanned aircraft systems or drones. The contract, awarded through Blighter’s representative in Spain, CIAC, is estimated to be worth around €2million.

The AUDS detect-track-identify-defeat counter-drone system was developed in 2015 by a consortium of UK defence companies including Blighter Surveillance Systems, Chess Dynamics and Enterprise Control Systems.

The AUDS system is the only mission-deployed fully integrated, military grade counter-UAS system on the market. It was selected by the Spanish Defence Ministry after careful market research and extensive field trials.

Mark Radford, CEO, Blighter Surveillance Systems, said: “We are delighted to have secured yet another sale of our strategic counter-UAV system. This contract with the Spanish military follows the successful mission deployment of multiple AUDS systems by United States’ forces in 2016.

“AUDS is fully developed so we have been able to meet the Spanish Defence Ministry’s rapid delivery timescale,” added Mark Radford, “the systems were shipped in late May 2017 for immediate deployment following operator training.”

The AUDS team has now carried out 1,500+ drone sorties and been tested against 60+ types of drone including fixed wing and quadcopters.

The AUDS system can detect, track, identify and defeat a drone in approximately 15 seconds at a range of up to 10km or six miles. AUDS detects a drone using the electronic scanning micro-Doppler radar, tracks it using precision infrared and daylight cameras and advanced video tracking software before using a non-kinetic radio frequency (RF) inhibitor to defeat the drone.

Using AUDS, the operator can effectively take control of a drone and force a safe landing. The AUDS system is military grade, designed and proven to operate in harsh environments. It works in all weather, day or night and the disruption is flexible, proportional and operator controlled.

AUDS is positioned at the strategic end of the UAS countermeasures market for use by government agencies, the police and military to protect high value critical national infrastructure and personnel or strategically important sites/events. These include nuclear power stations, borders, political, sporting or VIP events, airports and airbases.

AUDS Counter-drone System First to Achieve TRL-9 Status

  • AUDS detect-track-defeat counter-drone system is the only TRL-9 rated fully integrated counter-UAS system on the market following successful mission deployment in 2016 to U.S. military customers
  • Multiple AUDS systems sold & shipped through North American partner Liteye Systems are now deployed and fully operational
  • AUDS team to consolidate market leading position with new platforms for different markets/applications including fixed, semi-permanent and temporary configurations

London, UK, January 18, 2017 – The AUDS counter-UAS defence system – field proven to detect, track and defeat malicious and errant unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) or drones – is the first fully integrated system worldwide to achieve TRL-9 status. This follows the successful mission deployment of the AUDS system with United States Forces.

TRL-9 is the very highest technology readiness level or maturity that a technology system can attain. According to the United States Department of Defense (DoD) and NASA definitions, TRL-9 signifies that a technology system or product is in its final form and that the actual system is proven through successful mission operations.

Mark Radford, speaking for the AUDS team, said: “Achieving TRL-9 status is an important milestone for AUDS in the embryonic counter-drone market. The sale and deployment of multiple AUDS systems to the U.S. military to protect critical assets and personnel makes AUDS, we believe, the only TRL-9 rated fully integrated strategic counter-UAS system on the market.”

Over the last 18 months, the AUDS system has been heavily evaluated and tested by military and government organisations. Through this process, AUDS consistently exceeded the mission requirements, simultaneously providing ground and air surveillance against possible threats.

The AUDS system – developed by Blighter Surveillance Systems, Chess Dynamics and Enterprise Control Systems – can detect a drone six miles (10km) away using electronic scanning radar, track it using precision infrared and daylight cameras and advanced video tracking software before disrupting the flight using a non-kinetic inhibitor to block the radio signals that control it.

This detect, track, defeat process is very quick and typically takes 8-15 secs. Using AUDS, the operator can effectively take control of a drone and force a safe landing. The AUDS system works in all weather, day or night and the disruption is flexible, proportional and operator controlled.

AUDS is positioned at the strategic end of the UAS countermeasures market for use by government agencies, the police and military to protect high value critical national infrastructure or strategically important sites/events. These include nuclear power stations, borders, political, sporting or VIP events, airports and airbases.

AUDS is also currently being evaluated by the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) for use at major U.S. airports as part of its Pathfinder Programme. The FAA has signed a Co-operative Research and Development Agreement (CRDA) with Liteye Systems, the AUDS team’s manufacturing and integration partner in North America, to test AUDS at US airports selected by the FAA

To further consolidate its market leading position, the AUDS team has developed a range of new platforms – fixed, semi-permanent and temporary – to better meet the needs of customers in different markets. These include a platform for the deployment of AUDS to the roof of a building; a field mast system for the protection of semi-permanent sites such as forward operating bases (FOB), air bases or army camps; and a system for rapid deployment purposes.

AUDS will be showcasing its counter-UAS solutions at The International Defence Exhibition and Conference (IDEX 2017), at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre (ADNEC), Abu Dhabi, UAE, from 19 to 23 February 2017. AUDS will be represented at IDEX by its local UAE partner Trust International in Hall 11/Stand C05.

Blighter’s Coastal Radar Optimised to Detect the Undetectable

  • Blighter C400 series e-scan radars optimised to detect small, slow moving & uncooperative targets such as the small boats used by smugglers, pirates, illegals and terrorists approaching a coastline; radar can detect 1m² target (small wooden boat, panga or dory) at range of up to 11km (6.8 miles), and works day & night, in heavy rain, dense fog and rough seas
  • C400 series radars feature advanced Doppler signal processing, low power PESA and FMCW technologies, static target detector, built-in sea clutter filter with low false alarm rate, and ‘shadow boost’ facility to detect boats landing even if close to the radar

Cambridge, UK, November 30, 2016 – Blighter Surveillance Systems Ltd (www.blighter.com), a British electronic-scanning (e-scan) radar and sensor solution provider, has unveiled the Blighter® C400 series coastal security radar to detect unwanted intruders such as smugglers, pirates, illegals and terrorists approaching a coastline by boat.

The Blighter C400 series is a modular, solid-state non-rotating e-scan advanced Doppler radar designed specifically for the detection of small, slow moving and uncooperative targets often undetectable by traditional coastal surveillance systems and maritime radars.

For example, the radar can detect a small wooden boat, panga or dory with a radar cross-section (RCS) of 1m² at a range of up to 11km (6.8 miles). It does this day and night, in heavy rain, dense fog or even rough seas.

The Blighter C400 series radar is optimised for this purpose with a range of features including advanced Doppler signal processing, low power passive electronically scanned array (PESA) and frequency modulated continuous wave (FMCW) technologies.

The radar also has a built-in static target detector, sea clutter filter with low false alarm rate, and a ‘shadow boost’ feature that gives the radar an extremely short minimum detection range (10 metres) to enable boats to be detected as they land, even when close to the radar.

Blighter radars are already operational on water borders in Europe and Asia and to protect sea-facing royal palaces. Moreover, the new C400 series has been demonstrated in numerous ports, harbours and coastlines around the world and has proven to be highly effective against small and uncooperative targets.

Mark Radford, CEO, Blighter Surveillance Systems, said: “The principal challenge for coastal security system integrators is detecting unwanted intruders using small and slow moving boats during poor environmental conditions. That’s because smugglers, terrorists, pirates and illegals exploit the weather conditions to evade detection knowing that sensors are often compromised during heavy rains and at high sea states.

“However, we have designed the Blighter C400 coastal security radar to work in these conditions by developing techniques and algorithms for differentiating boats from waves and detecting very slow and static objects on the water surface, even in cluttered environments. Hence, we can detect a kayak, canoe, jet-ski, RIB or other small boat alongside larger ships even in a busy harbour or port.”

The Blighter C400 series radar uses advanced Doppler signal processing to provide the ability to precisely examine the motion of waterborne objects with respect to waves or ripples on the water surface. Unlike traditional Doppler radars, the C400 series characterises non-moving targets using the static target detector so that moored boats, buoys and other structures remain visible on the radar screen.

The radar’s built-in sea clutter filter automatically adapts to changing sea states and wave conditions to remove the unwanted radar signal produced by waves using both velocity (speed) and amplitude (height) characteristics.

The Blighter C400 series radar can be used as part of a larger coastal security system incorporating day/night and fog penetrating electro-optical camera systems, AIS (automatic identification system), other boat transponder/tracking systems and CCTV. These elements can be all controlled through the BlighterView HMI command and control (C2) software platform.

The Blighter C400 series radar is designed to protect seaports, harbours, as well as land-based coastal assets such as oil & gas facilities, desalination plants, nuclear power stations, palaces and other high value assets. The radar can also be used for river and estuary monitoring in situations where bulky coastal surveillance radars are unsuitable.

Blighter Surveillance Systems delivers an integrated multi-sensor package to systems integrators comprising the Blighter radars plus cameras, thermal imagers, trackers and software solutions.

Its ITAR-free systems are used worldwide in commercial, government and defence markets in area and asset protection for national border security, homeland security, critical infrastructure protection such as oil & gas facilities, coastal surveillance, and in military applications.

Blighter radar solutions are used at Heathrow and other international airports, by the British Army for force protection, and in numerous asset protection and border security applications, including monitoring the Korean Demilitarised Zone (DMZ), a buffer zone which runs 250 km across the Korean peninsula and separates North and South Korea.

Blighter Makes Key Appointments to Target Oil & Gas Industry with Doppler Radar and Thermal Camera Solution

  • Roy Cummings, formerly at AMG Systems, joins Blighter to spearhead renewed focus on oil, gas and petrochemical markets; Blighter also appoints Middle Eastern distributor, Electroman, to focus on critical infrastructure sales in Oman
  • Renewed concern over terrorism and government imposed security levels is prompting oil & gas facilities to consider high reliability Doppler radar and thermal imaging systems as alternative to fence-line/CCTV solutions; cost saving potential through reduced manning levels is also a factor for facility managers

Cambridge, UK, 10 August, 2016 – Blighter Surveillance Systems Ltd (www.blighter.com), a British electronic-scanning (e-scan) radar and sensor solution provider, is targeting the oil, gas and petrochemical markets with its Blighter B400 Series e-scan Doppler radar and long range thermal camera surveillance solution.

To support this move, Blighter has made some key strategic appointments. Roy Cummings, formerly at AMG Systems, joins the Blighter sales team with responsibility for critical infrastructure protection. He brings 30-years of experience in the security systems and CCTV market, most recently working with integration and consulting companies in the Gulf, notably Bahrain, Kuwait, Libya, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the UAE.

Blighter has also appointed a Middle Eastern partner/distributor, Electroman, to focus on critical infrastructure sales in Oman. Electroman has offices at Muscat and Salalah. These strategic appointments will help the company service this important market more effectively.

Mark Radford, CEO, Blighter Surveillance Systems, said: “We are seeing growing interest in our high reliability Doppler radar and thermal imaging systems for protecting oil & gas facilities due to their effectiveness and their cost saving potential. For example, manning levels have been reduced substantially where our radar/camera systems are employed instead of fence-line/CCTV solutions.

“Furthermore, the ongoing threat of terrorism at oil and gas wells, pipelines and pumping stations, processing facilities and storage/distribution hubs, is also prompting security managers at critical infrastructure sites to consider our high reliability solution.”

According to Radford, the establishment of new mandatory in-country security levels by several oil and gas producing nations is another factor which is driving companies to assess the effectiveness of 24/7 all-weather radar/camera systems. In fact, the Blighter solution is already installed at a number of critical infrastructure sites in the Middle East, including one to protect a large gas refinery.

“The Blighter system is appealing to oil and gas facilities as it’s quick and comparatively inexpensive to deploy, and re-deploy, as the radar and thermal cameras are mounted on existing infrastructure thereby minimising installation costs and maximising flexibility,” added Mark Radford. “We even have the capability to look upwards and detect the growing threat of airborne incursions from unmanned aerial vehicles or drones.”

The Blighter B400 series Doppler radar delivers a 24/7 all-weather persistent surveillance capability. It can detect a walking person at 11km (6.8 miles) or a large moving vehicle at 25km (15.5 miles) and then cue a camera system to follow and identify targets.

Blighter Surveillance Systems delivers an integrated multi-sensor package to systems integrators comprising the Blighter radars plus cameras, thermal imagers, trackers and software solutions. Its ITAR-free systems are used worldwide in commercial, government and defence markets in area and asset protection for national border security, homeland security, critical infrastructure protection such as oil and gas facilities, coastal surveillance, and in military applications.

  • AUDS team to make debut at Farnborough International Airshow, the biennial showcase for the aviation world (Farnborough, Hampshire, UK) on Stand OE17 from 11-17 July 2016
  • Anti-UAV Defence System (AUDS) is the world’s first fully integrated detect-track-disrupt-defeat counter-UAV system; AUDS team to showcase ‘live’ system at Farnborough
  • AUDS recently selected by the United States Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) for evaluation at US airports as part of its Pathfinder Programme

London, UK, 11 July, 2016 – The counter-UAV AUDS team, consisting of Blighter Surveillance Systems, Chess Dynamics, Enterprise Control Systems and Liteye Systems, Inc., will showcase its Anti-UAV Defence System (AUDS) at this year’s Farnborough International Airshow.

This biennial showcase for the world of aviation takes place on 11-17 July in Farnborough, Hampshire, UK, and attracts both the defence and commercial sectors including military delegations from over 45 countries, 22 international pavilions and more than 1500 exhibitors.

Mark Radford, speaking for the AUDS team, said, “The threat from small, commercially available UAVs is high and AUDS has been specifically designed, fully tested and is production ready to deal with the problem. Not only can it detect, track, disrupt, and defeat drones, it can also provide vital evidence for subsequent criminal charges. Farnborough, with its wide range of international military, security and commercial visitors provides the team with an excellent opportunity to demonstrate its capability.”

The AUDS system is designed for countering drones or unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) in remote border areas, at key infrastructure sites such as airports, air fields, nuclear power stations, oil refineries or for protecting political, sporting or VIP events in urban areas. It can be operated from fixed locations and from mobile platforms.

The AUDS system is the world’s first fully integrated detect-track-disrupt-defeat counter-UAV system that can detect an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) or drone six miles (10km) away using electronic scanning radar, track it using precision infrared and daylight cameras and specialist video tracking software before disrupting the flight using an inhibitor to block the radio signals that control it.

This detect, track, disrupt, defeat process is very quick and typically takes 8-15 secs. Using AUDS, the operator can effectively take control of a drone and force a safe landing or send it back home. The AUDS team has now carried out over 400 hours of ‘live’ testing in government related trials against more than 400 flown sorties of group 1 UAVs.

At Farnborough, the AUDS team will showcase a ‘live’ system comprising Blighter Surveillance Systems’ A400 Series Ku band electronic scanning air security radar, Chess Dynamics’ Hawkeye stabilised electro-optic director, infrared and daylight cameras and target tracking software, and a directional radio frequency (RF) inhibitor from Enterprise Control Systems.

Interest in the AUDS system from the defence and commercial sectors has been significant since the production-ready system was launched in September 2015. In May 2016, the AUDS system was selected – through Liteye Systems – by the United States Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) for evaluation at US airports as part of its Pathfinder Programme. This FAA research programme is designed to evaluate technologies that can be used to detect and identify unauthorised unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) or drone flights near airports. AUDS Team Extends its Exclusive Partnership in North America with Liteye Systems Inc

  • Liteye Systems’ role as integration and support partner grows to include local manufacturing as well as development and customisation of the AUDS counter-UAS platform; AUDS mobile trailer platform developed by Liteye for rapid deployment purposes to support national security applications

London, UK, and Centennial, CO, USA, 14 June, 2016 – The British team that created AUDS (Anti-UAV Defence System), the world’s first production-ready and fully integrated counter-unmanned aircraft system (C-UAS) has extended its exclusive partnership in North America with Liteye Systems, Inc, in Centennial, Colorado.

Liteye has been leading the AUDS sales drive in the USA and Canada since the beginning of 2015 as the exclusive integration and support partner for the region. However, as interest in the AUDS system has grown, and following multiple government-sponsored trials, the partnership agreement has now been extended to include local manufacturing as well as local development and customisation of the AUDS platform.

Mark Radford, speaking for the AUDS team, said: “We have worked with Liteye for a number of years now and it has become an invaluable part of the AUDS group. We are delighted to now extend our strategic partnership with the company. We believe there is huge potential for our system in the North American market and Liteye’s selection by the FAA for US airport trials (see link to Liteye’s FAA release below) is testament to both the system’s capabilities and their hard work. Liteye has the knowledge and skills to manufacture, support and develop the AUDS platform for the US and Canadian markets and to provide full customisation where needed.”

Liteye will be responsible for manufacturing and supporting major components of AUDS including the radar, turret, thermal camera system, inhibitor and command and control (C2) system. Liteye will also be involved in designing and manufacturing the various platforms necessary to support a diverse range of end-users within the North American market. This will include the military, critical infrastructure providers such as airport operators, and other government agencies.

“Liteye is already providing development effort for US-specific C-UAS programs allowing us to integrate AUDS into and alongside other military and government assets,” added Mark Radford. “We have also worked with their engineers to enhance our system’s detect-track-disrupt-defeat capabilities by integrating a new ‘friendly asset’ into the platform. This allows us to use a drone as part of the AUDS remote observation and enforcement capabilities providing the ability to search out enemy UAS operators.”

Thomas Scott, president of Liteye Systems, said: “We are proud to be spearheading the AUDS North American operation to establish this highly effective counter-UAS system in the US and Canadian markets. Over the last 18 months, Liteye with AUDS has been at the cutting edge of counter-UAS development in this region, witnessing the proliferation of UAS use, both the bad and the good, from the front row. We are excited to expand our relationship with our UK partner companies in developing capabilities to meet this growing challenge.”

“The AUDS production-ready system is field proven in multiple trials to detect, track, identify, disrupt and defeat a wide range of unmanned systems – day and night whatever the weather,” added Thomas Scott. “And our new AUDS mobile trailer platform – an example of our integration capabilities – was developed and built at our Colorado site for rapid deployment purposes in national security applications and is already receiving much interest.”

Liteye’s ‘AUDS 360 Trailer’ system features a fully integrated AUDS system comprising Blighter Surveillance Systems’ 360° fully electronically-scanned A400 radar system, Chess Dynamics’ precision turret with thermal camera system, and Enterprise Control Systems’ directional multiband RF inhibitor system. This is a robust, go-anywhere rapid deployment system typically of the type used by the military. Other configurations of AUDS include a portable, quad-pod mounted rapid-deployment package and a fixed system that is compact enough to be installed on rooftop locations, remote masts or even on the ground.

The AUDS counter-UAS system was developed by a trio of British companies including Blighter Surveillance Systems, Chess Dynamics and Enterprise Control Systems. AUDS can detect a drone six miles (10km) away using electronic scanning radar, track it using precision infrared and daylight cameras and specialist video tracking software before disrupting the flight using an inhibitor to block the radio signals that control it. This detect, track, disrupt, defeat process is very quick and typically takes 8-15 secs. Using AUDS, the operator can effectively take control of a drone and force a safe landing or send it back home.

British Counter-UAV Technology (AUDS) Selected by FAA for US Airport Trials

  • AUDS to be tested by Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) as part of the agency’s Pathfinder Programme to detect and identify unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) flying too close to US airports
  • AUDS to be showcased at Eurosatory, the world’s largest international land and air/land defence and security exhibition, Paris, France from 13 to 17 June

London, UK, 31 May, 2016 – The world’s first fully integrated detect-track-disrupt-defeat Anti-UAV Defence System (AUDS) – developed by a trio of British companies including Blighter Surveillance Systems, Chess Dynamics and Enterprise Control Systems, and integrated/supported in North America by Liteye Systems Inc. – has been selected by the United States Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) for evaluation at US airports as part of its Pathfinder Programme.

This FAA research programme is designed to evaluate technologies that can be used to detect and identify unauthorised unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) or drone flights near airports. To this end, the FAA has signed a Co-operative Research and Development Agreement (CRDA) with Liteye Systems, the AUDS team’s manufacturing and integration partner in North America, to test AUDS at US airports selected by the FAA. (See FAA release – https://www.faa.gov/news/updates/?newsId=85532)

According to the FAA, each month it receives more than 100 reports from pilots and others who spot what appear to be unmanned aircraft flying too close to an airport or manned airplane. It has become a serious safety concern for the agency and a potential security issue for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

Mark Radford, speaking for the AUDS team, said, “We are delighted to have been selected for this strategic counter-UAS programme through Liteye. The FAA contacted our team following the success of AUDS at US Government sponsored counter UAV trials at the end of 2015. These trials confirmed that our production system was able to detect, track, disrupt and defeat a wide range of micro, mini and larger unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) or drones – even on unscripted sorties.”

AUDS (Anti-UAV Defence System) on TowerThe AUDS counter-UAV system can detect a drone six miles (10km) away using electronic scanning radar, track it using precision infrared and daylight cameras and specialist video tracking software before disrupting the flight using an inhibitor to block the radio signals that control it. This detect, track, disrupt, defeat process is very quick and typically takes 8-15 secs. The AUDS team has now carried out over 400 hours of ‘live’ testing in government related trials against more than 400 flown sorties of group 1 UAVs.

“AUDS is able to operate effectively in complex airport environments night and day whatever the weather and without disrupting other airport equipment,” added Mark Radford. “Using AUDS, the operator can effectively take control of a drone and force a safe landing inside or outside the airport perimeter.

“The system can also assist airport authorities to track down the UAV pilots for prosecution by providing evidence (video footage or radar tracks) to the relevant authorities. We can also integrate ‘friendly assets’ into the AUDS platform – for example a ‘friendly’ drone – to extend the threat detection and situational awareness capabilities of the system and to help capture rogue drone pilots.”

The Anti-UAV Defence System (AUDS) integrates the Blighter Surveillance Systems’ A400 Series Ku band electronic scanning air security radar, Chess Dynamics’ stabilised electro-optic director, infrared and daylight cameras and target tracking software, and a directional radio frequency (RF) inhibitor from Enterprise Control Systems to detect, track, classify, disrupt and defeat UAVs at ranges of up to 10km. The AUDS system is even effective against so-called Group 1 micro UAVs at ranges of up to 2km and Group 1 mini UAVs at ranges of several kms.

The AUDS system is designed for countering drones or remotely piloted aircraft systems (RPAS) in remote border areas, at key infrastructure sites such as airports, air fields, nuclear power stations, oil refineries or for protecting political or sporting events in urban areas. It can be operated from fixed locations and from mobile platforms.
