  • Blighter Surveillance Systems to showcase its radar technology on stand S3-235 at the DSEI Show, the world’s leading defence and security event, at the ExCeL Centre, London, 10-13 September 2019.

Cambridge, UK, September 4, 2019 – Blighter Surveillance Systems Ltd (www.blighter.com) (“Blighter”), a British designer and manufacturer of electronic-scanning (e-scan) radars and counter-drone solutions, has enhanced its Blighter A400 series counter-drone air security radar to better detect and report low, slow and small unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) or drones.

Blighter A400 Series Counter-UAV Radar

The ruggedised Blighter A400 series counter-UAV radar has been optimised with the addition of 40° antennas, D3 technology and an adaptable DSP platform. Blighter engineers are also providing a software development kit to systems integrators, primes and the military to ease integration of the radar with other sensors, C2 systems, as well as with kinetic and non-kinetic disruptors.

Angus Hone, CEO, Blighter Surveillance Systems, said: “Countering the threat caused by rogue drones is now a global issue and an increasing concern for the military, government and homeland security forces across every continent. Our Blighter A400 series radars are battle proven as the detection element of the strategic counter-UAS AUDS system deployed since 2016 in Iraq by US forces and more recently at London Gatwick Airport.”

The new U40 antennas are now available to increase vertical elevation coverage from 30 to 40-degrees. Digital Drone Detection (D³) technology with sensitivity boost has also been added. This will allow the A400 series to better extract the tiny radar reflections from modern plastic bodied drones even when flying close to the ground or near buildings where clutter reflections are relatively large.

Blighter engineers have also developed an adaptable digital signal processing (DSP) platform to accommodate moving ground clutter and thereby enable the radar to be deployed ‘on the move’.

The solid-state all-weather A400 series radars are optimised for the detection of small UAVs carrying video cameras, wireless communication systems, narcotics, explosives and other undesirable payloads. The radars detect and report Nano, Micro and Miniature drones at ranges from 10 metres up to 3.6 km (2.2 miles) and larger drones and aircraft at ranges up to 10 km (6.2 miles) at speeds from full flight down to hover-drift.

Mark Radford, co-founder and chief technology officer (CTO), Blighter Surveillance Systems, said: “Our symmetric transmit/receive e-scan architecture allows pin-point focus in complex cluttered environments and its use of ‘Ku Band’ spectrum with 2cm wavelength is ideal for interaction with small drones. What’s more, our e-scan technology combined with micro-Doppler signal processing allows us to manage clutter on-the-move yet still detect low, slow and small threats in the air and on the ground.”

The Blighter A400 series radars are modular non-rotating, e-scan systems using power efficient PESA (passive electronically scanned array) and FMCW (frequency modulated continuous wave) technologies to provide reliable, small and slow drone detection even in complex environments.

Blighter radars are deployed in 35 countries to deliver round the clock all-weather protection along borders, for coastal facilities, at military bases, and to guard critical national infrastructure such as airports, oil and gas facilities and palaces.

Blighter Surveillance Systems will showcase its radar technology on stand S3-235 at the DSEI Show, the world’s leading defence and security event, at the ExCeL Centre, London, 10-13 September 2019.

Blighter Radars Integrated with Genetec Security Center to Deliver Wide Area Radar Surveillance to Airports

  • Integration enables airports: to ‘fold-in’ the wide area surveillance capability provided by Blighter’s range of radars, super-charging situational awareness in their existing C2 systems; to share the radar data across other Genetec platforms including Genetec Clearance; and to create Dynamic Virtual Perimeters to ease construction hassle and the cost of airport expansion projects
  • Blighter and Genetec to showcase this capability on stand 4120 at the Passenger Terminal Expo, ExCeL Centre, London, 26-28 March 2019.

Cambridge, UK, March 26, 2019 – Blighter Surveillance Systems Ltd (www.blighter.com), a British designer and manufacturer of electronic-scanning (e-scan) radars and surveillance solutions, has partnered with Genetec™ (www.genetec.com) a leading technology provider of unified security, public safety, operations and business intelligence, to integrate its range of Blighter ground surveillance radars with Genetec™ Security Center, the company’s flagship unified IP security platform.

This integration enables airports to ‘fold-in’ the wide area surveillance capability provided by Blighter’s range of radars, super-charging situational awareness in their existing command and control (C2) systems to deliver round the clock surveillance in all weather and light conditions. The collaboration will also enable the Blighter radar and target tracking data to be shared across Genetec’s other decision management and support systems as well as with its collaborative digital management solution, Genetec Clearance™.

David Lenot, Director Transportation – EMEA, Genetec, said: “We are seeing a growing number of airports that want to add primary radar capability to their existing security and CCTV systems, so we are pleased to be partnering with Blighter Surveillance Systems to integrate their radars and tracker within Security Center. This integration will make it easier for our customers to introduce Blighter’s maintenance free solid-state micro Doppler radars and tracker into airports providing improved situational awareness but without adding to the complexity of installed systems.”

Another benefit of the Blighter/Security Center integration is the ability to create Dynamic Virtual (non-physical) Perimeters across an airport site. This is helpful for providing CZ/RZ (controlled zone/restricted zone) separation monitoring but it is particularly useful for the many airports undergoing expansion or enhancement projects. The ability to build Dynamic Virtual Perimeters around work areas is hugely attractive both as a cost saving measure and as a means of reducing disruption inside an operating area that is already very crowded and busy.

Geoff Moore, business development manager, Blighter Surveillance Systems, said: “The ability to create Dynamic Virtual Perimeters as opposed to putting up fences or turnstiles is extremely attractive for airports. It has the potential to save considerable time, money and minimise disruption during construction projects. Working with our radars, the sophisticated Security Center platform can quickly and easily set up zones on a map that trigger different types of action depending on complex configurable rule sets.”

Genetec Security Center is a unified security platform that blends IP security systems within a single intuitive interface to simplify operations. From access control, video surveillance, and automatic license plate recognition to communications, intrusion detection, and analytics, Security Center provides enhanced situational awareness, unified command and control, and connectivity to the Cloud.

“We are delighted to be integrating our radars and tracker with Genetec Security Center,” said Geoff Moore, business development manager, Blighter Surveillance Systems, “Genetec offers a wide-ranging global experience in the aviation sector – and a large installed base of airports – which has resulted in an extensive set of airport specific functionality being implemented inside the platform.”

Blighter’s passive electronically scanned array (PESA) radars, featuring Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave (FMCW) micro Doppler fast scan capability, perform well in cluttered airport environments, detecting small and slow-moving targets with minimal false alarms. The radars deliver a 24x7x365 all-weather persistent surveillance capability.

The Blighter B400 series radar – the most popular for airports – can detect and track a walking person at 11 km (6.8 miles), a crawler at 4.6 km (2.9 miles) or a large moving vehicle at 25 km (15.5 miles) and then cue a camera system to follow and identify targets. The Blighter radar can be mounted high up on existing airport infrastructure thereby minimising installation costs and maximising surveillance as the radar can see over obstacles including aircraft and vehicles.

Blighter Surveillance Systems and Genetec will showcase their products and solutions for airports on stand 4120 at the Passenger Terminal Expo, ExCeL Centre, London, 26-28 March 2019.

Dat-Con Defence Chooses B400 for Indian Border Security Pilot

  • Dat-Con Defence has deployed the Blighter B400 series radar on the Indian border as part of a pilot of the Indian Government’s Comprehensive Integrated Border Management System (CIBMS)
  • Dat-Con Defence to showcase the Blighter B400 radar at IDEX 2019 (Stand 10-B15: Slovenia Pavilion), 17-21 February 2019, Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre, UAE

Cambridge, UK, February 14, 2019 – Blighter Surveillance Systems Ltd (www.blighter.com), a British designer and manufacturer of electronic-scanning (E-scan) radars and surveillance solutions, is supplying its Blighter B400 series E-scan micro Doppler ground surveillance radar to Dat-Con Defence for deployment along the Indian border.

The Blighter radar was supplied to and deployed by Dat-Con Defence during 2018 as part of the Indian Government’s Comprehensive Integrated Border Management System (CIBMS). CIBMS is designed to establish a multi-tier security ring – ground surveillance radar, thermal cameras, unattended ground sensors, seismic vibration systems, fences and fence protection systems – to protect the country’s long international borders.

Dat-Con has integrated the Blighter radar, cameras and other sensors into its own command and control (C2) system. Sensor information from its C2 system is integrated with the CIBMS system to alert quick response teams (QRTs) of the Indian Border Security Force for action. Dat-Con has partnered with in-country Pune-based Ador Powertron for this pilot project.

Stane Plaskan, CEO of Dat-Con Defence, said: “The Blighter B400 micro Doppler radar is best-in-class as was demonstrated when it outperformed all the other radars in an Indian Government-sponsored trial. Also, we know that this radar is highly effective in difficult terrains – such as mountains, plains and coastal areas, as it has been deployed for many years now along the 250 km Korean DMZ, in what is considered one of the world’s most mountainous countries with environmental extremes of -30ºC in winter and a humid +40ºC in summer.”

The Blighter radar’s wide elevation beam was a key feature for the Indian CIBMS project as it ensures that the radar can operate effectively in all terrains allowing the hills, mountains, plains, riverine territories and marshes to be scanned simultaneously, without the need to tilt the radar. The wide beam also provides detection of low flying manned and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and drones.

The solid-state passive electronically scanned array (PESA) radar detects small and slow-moving targets, even in cluttered environments, due to the radar’s coactive frequency modulated continuous wave (FMCW) micro Doppler fast-scan processing. The radar delivers a 24x7x365 all-weather persistent surveillance capability. It can detect and track a walking person at 11 km (6.8 miles), a crawler at 4.6 km (2.9 miles) or a large moving vehicle at 25 km (15.5 miles) and then cue a camera system to follow and identify targets.

Mark Radford, CEO, Blighter Surveillance Systems, said: “This is our second contract win for pilot projects linked to the Indian border security CIBMS initiative – further proof of the quality of our ultra-reliable, zero-maintenance Blighter B400 series radar.”

Blighter Surveillance Systems has now sold hundreds of its E-scan ground surveillance radars across 35 different countries. It has systems deployed along the Korean demilitarised zone (DMZ), on the US Southern border, in several Middle Eastern countries, and now in India too. Blighter Surveillance Systems delivers an integrated multi-sensor package to system integrators comprising the Blighter radars plus cameras, thermal imagers, trackers and software solutions. Its ITAR-free systems are used worldwide in commercial, government and defence markets in area and asset protection for national border security, homeland security, critical infrastructure protection such as oil and gas facilities, coastal surveillance, and in military applications.

Dat-Con Defence will be showcasing the Blighter B400 series radar at The International Defence Exhibition and Conference (IDEX 2019), at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre (ADNEC), Abu Dhabi, UAE, (Stand 10-B15: Slovenia Pavilion), from 17 to 21 February 2019.

Blighter Surveillance Systems will also be exhibiting at SCTX 2019, the Security & Counter Terror Expo (Stand I-61) at London Olympia from 5 to 6 March 2019.

It is designed for rapid deployment (wide area detection can be up and running in a matter of minutes) from transport backpacks by foot patrol or from a vehicle for use in remote border surveillance, temporary camp protection, forward reconnaissance and other covert operations.

This radar provides rapid detection and location of moving targets. For example, it can detect a crawler at 1.5 km (0.9 miles) and a moving vehicle at 8 km (5 miles). The radar is tripod mounted, integrates seamlessly with infra-red sensors to automatically cue a camera to enable the operator to identify any target. For fully covert operation, the radar is also available as part of Blighter Explorer Nexus with an integrated visible and infra-red thermal imaging camera system, a Windows HMI, covert eyepieces and optional rugged laptop.

Blighter’s air security and drone detection capabilities will also be on display at MSPO on stand D43 as the Blighter A400 series radar is an integral part of the AUDS system, the world’s leading fully integrated military grade detect-track-identify-defeat counter drone solution.

The AUDS system, already successfully deployed by several governments, including US forces, was developed in 2015 by a consortium of UK defence companies including Blighter Surveillance Systems, Chess Dynamics and Enterprise Control Systems. The AUDS system has an intuitive interface, is operable by a single user, and can detect, track, identify and defeat a drone in approximately 15 seconds at a range of up to 10 km or six miles.

Mark Radford, CEO, Blighter Surveillance Systems, said: “MSPO provides an opportunity for Blighter to showcase our products to tens of thousands of visitors from 27 different countries and to support Linc Polska, our in-country partner. We are also presenting a paper at the event on the advantages of electronic scanning surveillance radar for ground and air security applications.” Blighter radar solutions are used by the U.S. military and the British Army for force protection, and in numerous asset protection and border security applications, including monitoring the Korean Demilitarised Zone (DMZ), a buffer zone which runs 250 km across the Korean peninsula and separates North and South Korea, on the US Southern border, and in several Middle Eastern countries.

Blighter Secures First E-scan Radar Sale into India for Border Security Pilot

  • Tata Power Company to deploy the Blighter B400 series radars as part of the Indian Government’s Comprehensive Integrated Border Management System (CIBMS)

Cambridge, UK, April 24, 2018 – Blighter Surveillance Systems Ltd (www.blighter.com), a British designer and manufacturer of electronic-scanning radars and surveillance solutions, has secured its first sale into India for its Blighter B400 series E-scan micro Doppler ground surveillance radars.

The contract was awarded by system integrator Tata Power Company Limited (Strategic Engineering Division) following Blighter’s success at a radar/sensor trial organised by India’s border management organisation in Gwalior in November/December 2016. The Blighter radars will be deployed by Tata Power during 2018 as part of the Indian Government’s Comprehensive Integrated Border Management System (CIBMS).

The CIBMS programme aims to establish a multi-tier security ring – ground surveillance radar, thermal cameras, unattended ground sensors, seismic vibration systems, fences and fence protection systems – to protect the country’s long international borders. Pilot projects are already underway as part of this modernisation programme.

Mark Radford, CEO, Blighter Surveillance Systems, said: “This is great news for Blighter in India and further confirmation of the quality of our ultra-reliable, zero-maintenance Blighter B400 series radar. Yet again, our product outperformed all the other radars in a Government-sponsored trial achieving the highest benchmarking performance and top technical score during the evaluation.”

The Blighter radar’s wide (20-degree) elevation beam was a key feature for the Indian CIBMS project as it ensures that the radar can operate effectively in all terrains allowing the hills, mountains, plains, riverine territories and marshes to be scanned simultaneously, without the need to tilt the radar. The wide beam also provides detection of low flying manned and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and drones.

The solid-state passive electronically scanned array (PESA) radar detects small and slow-moving targets – even in cluttered environments – due to the radar’s coactive frequency modulated continuous wave (FMCW) micro Doppler fast-scan processing.

“Our radar’s PESA technology and wide elevation beams are a big advantage for border security and were a key factor in securing this Indian contract,” added Mark Radford, “as they allow the radars to be mounted on towers, buildings and other infrastructure and to surveil an area of over 3,000 km² (1,800 square miles) in just seconds.”

The Blighter B400 E-scan micro Doppler radar delivers a 24x7x365 all-weather persistent surveillance capability. It can detect and track a walking person at 11km (6.8 miles), a crawler at 4.6km (2.9 miles) or a large moving vehicle at 25km (15.5 miles) and then cue a camera system to follow and identify targets.

Blighter Surveillance Systems has now sold hundreds of its E-scan ground surveillance radars across 35 different countries. It has systems deployed along the Korean demilitarised zone (DMZ), on the US Southern border, in several Middle Eastern countries, and now in India too.

Blighter Surveillance Systems delivers an integrated multi-sensor package to systems integrators comprising the Blighter radars plus cameras, thermal imagers, trackers and software solutions. Its ITAR-free systems are used worldwide in commercial, government and defence markets in area and asset protection for national border security, homeland security, critical infrastructure protection such as oil and gas facilities, coastal surveillance, and in military applications.

AUDS Counter-drone System Enhanced for Vehicle Deployment and to Defeat Swarm Attacks

  • AUDS detect-track-identify-defeat counter-drone system has been enhanced for deployment on semi-portable containers and on a range of vehicles for quick deployment and to provide on-the-pause capability against malicious drones
  • AUDS engineers have also developed a novel technique to more effectively defeat co-ordinated swarm attacks made up of mixed drone types approaching in complex mission scenarios
  • AUDS team to showcase the world’s leading mission deployed military grade counter-UAS system on stand S2-366 at the DSEI Show, the world’s leading defence and security event, at the ExCeL Centre, London, 12-15 September 2017.

London, UK, September 7, 2017 – The AUDS counter-UAS defence system, the world’s leading fully integrated military grade detect-track-identify-defeat counter drone solution, has been enhanced for deployment on military and commercial security and surveillance vehicles and with new technology to more effectively defeat swarm attacks by malicious unmanned aircraft systems (UAS), including long range winged drones.

The AUDS system, already successfully deployed and in 24/7 operations, was developed in 2015 by a consortium of UK defence companies including Blighter Surveillance Systems, Chess Dynamics and Enterprise Control Systems. The AUDS system has an intuitive interface, is operable by a single user, and can detect, track, identify and defeat a drone in approximately 15 seconds at a range of up to 10km or six miles.

Graham Beall, CEO of Chess Dynamics, speaking for the AUDS team, said: “We are committed to evolving the AUDS platform to meet the needs of military and security forces as they respond to the growing threat of malicious and errant UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicles). These latest enhancements will consolidate our position as one the leading providers of a fully integrated strategic non-kinetic electronic C-UAV system.”

AUDS on a vehicle delivers a rapid ‘on-the-pause’ counter-UAV capability against drones attacking a temporary base, mobile force, convoy or a national infrastructure site. The system has been optimised and further ruggedised for deployment on either military trucks or commercial surveillance vehicles, such as a converted Mercedes-Benz Sprinter-style van, as well as on semi-portable containers.

AUDS is already available in three standard configurations – a portable platform for rooftop installation, a rugged field-mast system for forward operating bases or temporary camps, and a fixed system for borders and critical infrastructure sites.

The AUDS system has proved to be highly effective against swarm attacks and has successfully defeated approaching 2,000 drone sorties and been tested against more than 60 types of drone including fixed wing and quadcopters. The team recognise that co-ordinated swarm attacks are increasing – particularly in the military sector – so its engineers have been working on algorithms and techniques improving the AUDS system’s capability to defeat these multi-drone attack scenarios.

“We have continued to refine our advanced RF inhibition capabilities to meet identified changes in the threat, enabling additional attributes designed to engage with some of the longer range fixed winged drones that have appeared over the last 12 months,” said Colin Bullock, CEO of Enterprise Control Systems. “Our specialist RF engineers have also further fine-tuned some advanced techniques to even more effectively defeat co-ordinated multi-drone swarm attacks made up of mixed drone types approaching in complex mission scenarios.”

The AUDS system is highly effective against multi-mode swarm attacks due its multi-band radio frequency (RF) inhibitor which can simultaneously target multiple threat ‘bands’ to defeat the command and control (C2) links deployed on UAVs. These C2 links are constantly evolving within the emerging threat landscape and the AUDS RF inhibition system continues to demonstrate its flexibility to rapidly address these changes in response to operational demands.

How AUDS works?

AUDS detects a drone using the electronic scanning micro-Doppler radar, tracks it using a precision controlled infrared and daylight camera system incorporating advanced video tracking software before using a non-kinetic radio frequency (RF) inhibitor to defeat the drone. Using AUDS, the operator can effectively disrupt the function of a drone enforcing an invisible impenetrable barrier. The AUDS system is designed and built to the highest military standards and has been extensively field proven in harsh operational environments. It works in all weather, day or night and at all times the disruption response is flexible, proportional and operator controlled.

AUDS is positioned at the strategic end of the UAS countermeasures market for use by government agencies, the police and military to protect high value critical national infrastructure and personnel or strategically important sites/events. These include nuclear power stations, borders, political, sporting or VIP events, airports and airbases.

The worldwide market for counter-drone technology is expected to grow from $342.6million in 2016 to $1.5billion by 2023, according to a July 2017 research report from MarketandMarkets. Non-kinetic electronic systems, like the AUDS system, are estimated to grow at the highest rate (CAGR of 30.9%) – during the forecast period.

  • New entry level Blighter B400 radar delivers all the benefits of a solid-state e-scan radar: exceptional detection (man at 4 km), day/night all weather operation, low manning levels, zero maintenance, low installation costs, lower through life costs and lower false alarm rates – all at a lower price per km² than any other ground radar
  • BlighterView software optimised for perimeter security with control of multiple radar and cameras (auto slew-to-cue), alert and exclusion zones and easy integration with standard video management systems due to ONVIF compliance
  • Blighter to showcase new product on stand S4-154 at the DSEI Show, the world’s leading defence and security event, at the ExCeL Centre, London, 12-15 September 2017

Cambridge, UK, September 5, 2017 – Blighter Surveillance Systems Ltd (www.blighter.com), a British designer and manufacturer of electronic-scanning radars and surveillance solutions, has introduced a lower cost, entry level version of its Blighter B400 Series Doppler ground surveillance radar aimed specifically at airports and critical infrastructure sites such as oil/gas facilities, power stations or even palaces.

The new version of the radar delivers all the benefits of a solid-state e-scan Doppler radar – including exceptional detection (man at 4 km), day/night operation in all weather and light conditions, low manning levels, zero maintenance, low installation costs, lower through life costs and lower false alarm rates – at a lower price per km² than any other ground radar.

The BlighterView HMI 2 software has also been optimised for perimeter security allowing control over multiple radar and cameras (automatic slew-to-cue) and sophisticated alert and exclusion zones to be created. Blighter engineers have also enhanced BlighterView to allow easy integration with standard video management systems (VMS) with ONVIF compliance.

Mark Radford, CEO, Blighter Surveillance Systems, said: “Our engineers have optimised the design of the new radar, the processing chain and the control software to better meet the needs of our critical infrastructure customers. We have re-engineered the Blighter B400 radar to get to a price point that is attractive to this market and that will deliver improved detection at a lower cost compared with CCTV, thermal imaging systems and low cost, short range mechanically scanned radars.”

The solid-state Blighter passive electronically scanned array (PESA) radar detects small and slow-moving targets – even in cluttered environments – due to the radar’s coactive frequency modulated continuous wave (FMCW) Doppler fast-scan processing.

“Our radar’s PESA technology and wide elevation beams are a big advantage for critical infrastructure sites,” added Mark Radford, “as it allows the radars to be mounted on top of existing site buildings – for ease of connection to readily available sources of power and network connectivity, while still giving clear line-of-sight to the perimeter and maintaining the full integrity of the radar coverage zone.”

Blighter B400 radars are already in use at many critical infrastructure sites including several major international airports in Europe, United States, South America and Africa. In the UK, a Blighter radar/camera surveillance system already forms part of the perimeter security solution at Heathrow airport.

A typical Blighter airport/critical infrastructure site configuration consists of the new Blighter B400 Series radar (90 or 180-degree scanning with detection ranges of 2 km, 5 km and 8 km), BlighterView HMI software, and slew-to-cue PTZ (pan, tilt, zoom) thermal imaging surveillance camera systems.

Blighter Surveillance Systems will showcase the Blighter B400 series radar and other products on stand S4-154 at the DSEI Show, the world’s leading defence and security event, at the ExCeL Centre, London, 12-15 September 2017.
